Unconditional Love

What does unconditional love mean to you?

The definition of conditional is describing something that will be done or will happen only if and when another thing is done or happens. Unconditional means complete or guaranteed, without conditions, limitations, or provisions attached.

It is said that a mother’s love is unconditional. No matter what the circumstances, how deep the hurt or unfulfilled expectations the love a mother has for her child is guaranteed, which means something that assures a particular outcome, and that outcome would be love.

Many clients have shared the need to accomplish something in order to deserve their mother’s love. Is this your experience with your mother? Some carry beliefs that act as the rudder in their ship of life, such as:

  • “I’ll make you proud of me if it’s the last thing I do.”
  • “I’ll never do it good enough for her.”
  • “She never accepts me for who I am.”

So life becomes the stage to play out a mission to prove something rather than being present in each moment, knowing that your past was perfect, that you are responsible for the quality of your relationships and that your mother is/was the exact person to offer you the lessons for personal and spiritual growth. She nurtured with the tools that she had available to her at the time.

Nurturing is something we all have the potential to do; for other children, friends, our pets, the earth, strangers, or anyone In need of a smile, gentle touch, open heart or a listening ear. Mothering can be another term for nurturing, and unconditional love. Demands, stress, strain, burden and anxiety are not part of unconditional love. This depth of love says, “I love you,” regardless. When we are identified with our true nature, Presence, the divinity within us we are in that sacred place of unconditionally loving.

Almost twenty years ago I recorded an audio tape, which is a companion to my book, ABC Feelings. This momentous event was done in a broom closet of an elementary school with two children; Julia age 6 and Riley age 9. Julia sang the song to represent the letter, “L is for feeling Loving.” The words have touched many hearts, and not just those of children: I love you no matter what you do. I may not like what you did but I still love who you are. I may not like what you said but I still love you. This is unconditional love. Try it for a day. Be free of judgment, attachment or resistance. Watch for the miracles.

My mom is a neverending song in my heart of comfort, happiness, and being. I may sometimes forget the words but I always remember the tune.
