The Attitude Doc- Weekly Life Change Lessons

Many of you may have heard the term, “Dark Night of the Soul.” It’s a rather intense transformative experience involving the ego and the soul. It generally means a lengthy and profound absence of light and hope.

Taken from the website, “You try to be loving and find at times your heart is hard like stone. Sometimes your projects fall down around your ears. You keep struggling and still you don’t break through. You understand the path is one of joy and yet your life seems to have been barren… Where did that early joy and zest go? You feel so totally alone.” There is so much more rich and valuable content on this subject on their site. It’s truly quite fascinating. “None of your thoughts have proven adequate to your suffering. Not one — even repeated fifty thousand times — breaks the inner storm and lets in light.”

Although I was spending time in one of the most beautiful spots on the planet, to some degree I tasted that dark night. It reminded me of my old self, thirty years ago, who blamed everyone for all the wrong in the world. Today it included the absurdity of war and senseless deaths, global warming, thousands living in refugee camps, hungry children, escalating homeless stats. You know the list. It’s pathetic.

The hopelessness of it all was creeping into my consciousness like the eclipse of the moon, moment by moment, my normally joyful and positive attitude was slipping away. I got sucked in pretty good. Nothing I did worked.

  • Positive affirmations
  • Gratitude journaling
  • Meditating
  • Exercise
  • Service
  • Conscious processing
  • Allowing and observing

I didn’t even want to be around me, feeling alone, with nowhere to turn. “But you realize in the midnight of your soul that you have tried every option you know of. You feel you may have to stay this way forever, doing the regular day-to-day things, but in this mood of emptiness.”

Desperately yearning to welcome the light back into my life I thought for sure a change of scenery would shift the energy, as I relocated into yet another warm and sunny climate. However the darkness actually intensified and my inner struggle was becoming so painful.

And then it happened as night follows day. One morning I woke up to the spiritual being I know myself to be; kind, understanding and compassionate, but mostly at peace with myself once again. Thank you Life. Thank you Universe. Thank you Great Spirit. It IS all perfect and everything is happening on course, with each soul fulfilling its journey. There are no mistakes in the Universe. I will continue to trust the process, be open, listen to and follow the guidance I receive, doing my part in this lifetime to make the world a better place.

And who knows, maybe everything I did to heal all worked and it just needed time. Ah yes, there is such a thing as Divine Timing.

Today I strengthen the chamber within where only peace abides and where my life is anchored, that provides me with the trust that divine timing is always operating flawlessly.

Whatever conditions confront me I know that they represent the next step of my unfoldment. I will welcome all tests because I know that within me is the intelligence to understand and the power to overcome.
